Panch Mahapurusha Yogas: All Five Rules, Examples and Timing
Check Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Shasha Yoga using the correct planet, sign and kendra requirements, with examples of qualifying and non-qualifying placements.
The five Panch Mahapurusha yogas use a memorable two-part rule: a qualifying sign plus an angular house. Missing either part means the ascendant-based formation described here is not satisfied.
They are traditionally associated with prominent expressions of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn. Those interpretations are not scientifically established promises of exceptional achievement.
All five formation rules#
For this baseline, the planet must occupy its own sign or exaltation sign, and be in house 1, 4, 7 or 10 from the ascendant.
| Yoga | Planet | Own-sign options | Exaltation option | Traditional theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Mars | Aries or Scorpio | Capricorn | Initiative, courage, command |
| Bhadra | Mercury | Gemini or Virgo | Virgo | Analysis, language, organisation |
| Hamsa | Jupiter | Sagittarius or Pisces | Cancer | Learning, counsel, teaching |
| Malavya | Venus | Taurus or Libra | Pisces | Aesthetics, relationships, comforts |
| Shasha | Saturn | Capricorn or Aquarius | Libra | Structure, endurance, responsibility |
Virgo appears twice in Mercury's row because it is both an own sign and the exaltation sign. That does not create two separate Bhadra Yogas for the same placement.
The Sun and Moon are not additional members of this five-planet set. Rahu or Ketu in an angular house do not substitute for the required planet.
Three examples that expose the common mistake#
These are hypothetical sign-and-house examples, not biographical case studies.
Example A: Hamsa forms#
Cancer rising with Jupiter in Cancer places Jupiter in an exaltation sign and in the first house. Both baseline checks pass.
This establishes formation. It does not establish that the person is wise, morally superior or destined to become a teacher.
Example B: exaltation without Hamsa#
Taurus rising with Jupiter in Cancer places Jupiter in the third whole-sign house. The exaltation check passes, but the kendra check fails.
Calling this Hamsa Yoga under the ascendant-based rule would be a mistake. Jupiter's dignity can still be discussed on its own.
Example C: a kendra without Ruchaka#
Aries rising with Mars in Cancer places Mars in the fourth house. The kendra check passes, but Cancer is neither Mars's own sign nor its exaltation sign.
Being angular is not enough. This example is precisely why “Mars in the fourth gives Ruchaka” is incomplete.
Ascendant and Moon are different reference points#
Some discussions also consider angular relationships from the Moon. If you use such a convention, name it explicitly. A placement that is fourth from the Moon may not be fourth from the ascendant.
Celestial Digits' Mahapurusha detector uses kendras from the ascendant. Before comparing two websites, check whether they are applying the same reference point and the same zodiac settings. See why kundlis differ between websites.
How strong is a formed yoga?#
Formation and condition remain separate questions. A traditional assessment may examine degrees, combustion for applicable planets, other planetary influences, house ownership and divisional context. Different practitioners can weigh those factors differently.
The current app detector labels an exaltation placement strong and a qualifying own-sign placement moderate. That is a coarse classification attached to this detector, not a full Shadbala assessment or a forecast that one person will outperform another.
Likewise, a supporting placement in D9 should not become an excuse to ignore uncertain birth inputs. Divisional charts can be sensitive near boundaries, as our five-minute example demonstrates.
When might a Mahapurusha yoga be examined in timing?#
Periods involving the participating planet are an obvious place to begin within the tradition. That planet's antardasha can also appear under other major lords; there is no single activation age shared by all five yogas.
In the app, the timing annotation checks period-lord overlap. It does not verify that a traditional personality description or a particular life event has occurred.
Your quick verification checklist#
Open your birth chart and find the named planet. Check its sign, then its house from the ascendant. Only after both conditions pass should you inspect its broader condition and timing.
Avoid turning these names into personality rankings. A person without a detected Mahapurusha Yoga can still develop remarkable skills; a person with one can still struggle. The chart label is not a measure of human worth.
Discuss: Did your result depend on exaltation, own sign, or the choice of reference point?
